Savoury snacks was the overall strongest performer within snacks in Q2 2020 due to lockdown measures due to the emergence of COVID-19, including the closure of foodservice outlets such as bars and restaurants, popular leisure and entertainment sources such as cinemas, and the fact that consumers were encouraged to remain at home. This resulted in a notable shift in consumption, as Americans turned to alternative sources of entertainment including streaming digital content on Netflix, or Disney+ for younger children, resulting in families recreating the cinema experience at home, which included the consumption of various savoury snacks such as tortilla chips, potato chips and popcorn.
Frito-Lay Co strengthened its leadership of a fragmented competitive landscape in 2020, offering a wide product portfolio within savoury snacks, covering the leading five brands including Lay's, Doritos and Frito-Lay (all globally owned by PepsiCo Inc). The player has continued to maintain consumers’ interest over the review period, consistently launching new products including limited-edition Lay’s flavours such as Pimento Cheese and New England Lobster Roll within potato chips, although its distinctive crinkle cut potato chips Ruffles recorded more impressive current value growth in Q2.
Smaller distribution channels for savoury snacks that are supported by impulse purchases recorded declining value share in Q2 as consumers were encouraged to remain at home, thereby reducing on-the-go consumption through the likes of convenience stores, forecourt retailers and vending. Nevertheless, while larger distribution channels hypermarkets and supermarkets remained the most popular distribution channels for savoury snacks as consumers made bulk purchases of larger pack sizes to see them through lockdown, supporting various snacking occasions in the home such as watching films or accompanying a beer, the latter lost value share to the smaller e-commerce, which recorded an impressive performance in Q2 with triple-digit current value growth.
