Disrupting a pattern of declining volume sales, savoury snacks has registered a positive performance in Brazil since the outbreak of COVID-19, and this will continue in 2021 as COVID-19 cases remain at even higher levels than those of the previous year. As many consumers continue to isolate at home, avoiding gatherings with family and friends, savoury snacks has shifted from being a social appetiser product to a more individual snack.
As home seclusion will continue for much of 2021, many brands are managing to retain sales even with portfolios based on on-the-go formats which were largely consumed by children in schools and as appetizers in bars and restaurants before the outbreak of COVID-19. Despite maintaining some volume sales in these formats, however, many companies focused on these smaller formats invested in developing home-adapted formats following the outbreak of COVID-19.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, consumers are shopping less frequently but making larger purchases per visit, with many consumers using home delivery services to reduce their contact with others. With rising contamination rates reported in the first semester of 2021, this shopping behaviour is expected to continue for several months among many families.
Some of the advantages of e-commerce, mainly discovered during pandemic times, will lead some consumers to keep using these channels even after COVID-19 restrictions and the pandemic come to an end. The convenience of using a delivery service for grocery shopping has been an alternative for more vulnerable groups since the outbreak of the health crisis, helping them to prevent virus contamination as COVID-19 continues to spread across the country even in 2021.
To be fully implemented from 2022 onwards, the new nutritional labelling legislation by ANVISA will force companies to display more explicitly whether the product has high sugar, fat, or sodium content on their packaging using a standard label to be placed on the upper front face of the product. Also, the nutritional table will have to be visually adequate and with more detailed information about the actual nutrients found in each portion.
Although there has been a considerable shift towards retail channels since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Brazilian savoury snacks, foodservice channels are extremely important for savoury snacks as products in this category are frequently offered as appetizers or as part of meal deals or combo boxes in a number of well-known restaurant chains in Brazil. Also, impulse purchases in smaller retail outlets such as convenience stores and forecourt shops are another important source of volume sales in this category, especially when it comes to products designed for on-the-go consumption.
