Savoury snacks have been widely promoted in offline marketing, primarily in retailers’ own advertising leaflets and usually next to alcoholic beverages, especially as extra attention has been paid to beer. As periodic lockdowns and general home seclusion have fuelled growth of both categories, which complement each other, and encouraged producers to market primarily potato chips, puffed snacks and vegetables chips in the traditional format.
While the shift towards e-commerce has had a relatively small effect on savoury snacks, as such indulgent products are often associated with visits to physical stores, the gradual swing from small and family stores towards discounters has promoted the expansion of savoury snack ranges in general. This has particularly come at the expense of the on-the-go segments of ready meals, confectionery and sweet snack bars, as customers have purchased larger quantities of products with the idea of home consumption.
Nuts, seeds and trail mixes was one of the best performers in terms of retail value growth in 2020, just behind popcorn and vegetable, pulse and bread chips. Growth is accelerating in 2021, but is still slower than in previous years, as, in packaged food, this category originally targeted on-the-go consumption, which was badly hit during lockdown.
The forecast period looks bright for savoury snacks in Poland. These products are not as damaging to health as sugar- and chocolate-based snacks, while also offering affordable prices and easy storage.
Savoury snacks are popular during outdoor parties. In 2021 and in the previous two years, summers have been particularly hot, attracting people towards outdoor activities.
Private label’s percentage share of sales has been declining for the past two years. However, most of that can be attributed to the decline of Tesco Polska.
