COVID-19 had a minimal effect on sales of sugar confectionery in Cameroon in 2020, and in fact growth in 2020 outstripped 2019. These products are cheap, very widely available, sold largely through informal channels that more or less totally ignored quarantine restrictions in 2020 and 2021, and are far less dependent on import than other confectionery categories.
Leading local producers Tiger Brands Ltd maintain their grip on the category thanks to a clear understanding of local market conditions, and a carefully targeted marketing strategy. Despite the low prices of its sugar confectionery, it spends on brand promotion, and its products are available through modern, traditional and informal grocery retail channels.
Lollipops is, by a distance, set to be the best performing part of the category in 2021, reflecting the fact that the primary consumer base for sugar confectionery is children. Cameroon has a young and rapidly growing population, and as such this part of the consumer base continues to offer the strongest growth opportunities in 2021.
COVID-19 has had a minimal impact on sugar confectionery in Cameroon, largely because of the predominance of domestically made products. In addition, most sugar confectionery that is imported is largely sourced from Nigeria.
Sugar confectionery is set to see solid growth over the forecast period, with the country’s evolving demographics being a key driver. The primary consumer base for sugar confectionery is children below the age of 15, a cohort that accounts for 41% of Cameroon’s total population and is growing at a rate of almost 3% annually.
Consumer health and wellness trends are beginning to emerge in Cameroon, especially in the wake of the pandemic. In the long term, this may be a barrier to growth for sugar confectionery.
