Executive Summary

Jul 2018
PROSPECTS
Price rises undermine demand

Sugar confectionery suffered from a significant rise in prices at the end of the review period, a situation that was aggravated by the impact of the devaluation and liberalisation of the national currency on sugar prices towards the end of 2017. The increase in unit prices across sugar confectionery categories has prompted consumers to switch to less expensive unpackaged alternatives during the review period.

Upturn in volumes

Sugar confectionery is expected to see an upturn in volume sales over the forecast period, despite an ongoing increase in unit price. Demand is set to be supported by population growth and, particularly, a rising number of children aged between 8 and 17-years-old, as well as consumers migrating from chocolate, which is set to see significantly greater price increases than sugar confectionery.

Health attitudes represent threat

Obesity rates rose increased significantly over the review period and are expected to go on doing so through to the end of the forecast period. This is likely to put growing pressure on the health system and encourage the Uzbekistan Government to address the issue.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Consolidation

In 2018, Ukrainian company, Roshen Kondyterska Korporatsia, maintained a trend of share growth in sugar confectionery that persisted throughout the review period. The company benefits from a longstanding presence in the market and the most extensive distribution network across a wide range of channels and regions.

Smaller players struggle

The consolidation of sugar confectionery in Uzbekistan was bolstered by the problems of smaller players, which struggled to absorb rising production costs and remain competitive. Indeed, several players registering a value share outside the top 10 in 2016 either fell to a negligible share or disappeared from the market completely in the last two years of the review period.

International brands dominate

International companies dominated sugar confectionery in 2018. Imports benefit from strong promotional campaigns and high levels of consumer recognition established over many years in the country.
