Colgate-Palmolive Maroc SA’s Colgate and Signal from Unilever Maghreb SA dominate oral care, accounting for almost two thirds of retail value sales between them in 2021. Both of these brand are well known to local consumers and widely distributed.
The distribution of oral care is dominated by health and beauty specialists and other beauty and personal care non-grocery specialists. Both modern and traditional grocery retailers are of no more than secondary importance in this category.
The rate of growth in retail constant value sales of oral care will accelerate over the course of the forecast period but remain less dynamic than in the review period prior to the onset of the pandemic, with toothpaste the main driver of growth. Growth will be supported by urbanisation and an anticipated post-pandemic economic rebound.
Despite the ongoing use of miswak (a tooth-cleaning twig made from the Salvadora persica tree) as a traditional alternative to cleaning teeth and a way of reducing toothache and bad breath, increasing interest in personal appearance and wellbeing will stimulate growth for oral care over the forecast period. Due to the ongoing interest in beauty and appearances due to pressure from social media, toothpastes that offer whitening properties are expected to grow in popularity, especially among young adults.
E-commerce will grow in importance as a distribution channel for oral care during the forecast period. Affluent young urban consumers will become more comfortable doing their grocery shopping online, appreciating the wide product offer, competitive pricing and convenience offered by this channel.
