According to the Peruvian Ministry of Health, over 90% of Peruvians have cavities, while 85% suffer from periodontal diseases which can be very dangerous in pregnant women and in people with diabetes. The use of power toothbrushes is very limited in Peru, as a consequence of the low purchasing power of a large part of the population. Many consumers do not even change their manual toothbrushes with the regularity that the manufacturers recommend.
The presence of private label products in oral care remains very limited. At the time of writing there was only one private label brand available, which was Balanzé from Supermercados Peruanos SA.
There has been a global increase in awareness around issues relating to the environment and sustainability and this is likely to increasingly inform new product development within oral care. Tooth whiteners is a niche category in Peru, despite the fact that there is a general belief that white teeth are much more beautiful than yellowing ones. However, despite this, there is a general lack of knowledge among customers about the availability of these treatments over the counter, since most think that teeth whitening is something that only dentists can do and which is therefore expensive.
