During 2020, the pandemic provided a modest boost to demand for oral care in Spain. Dentists were closed over the lockdown, as they were not deemed to be essential services by the government.
Having a good smile is increasingly important to younger Spaniards, with a high level of social media use one of the drivers of this. However, they increasingly prefer to have this done professionally by a dentist, rather than buying tooth whiteners at retail and doing it themselves at home.
Much as is happening in other categories, players in oral care are concentrating on providing more natural ranges, with fewer chemicals in their formulations. In 2020, Lacer SA launched Lace Natur, which offers a more natural formulation and a wooden toothbrush.
Retail constant value sales of oral care will be flat during the forecast period as a whole. While the pandemic has served to heighten local consumer interest in health and wellness, mounting inflationary pressure during the early part of the forecast period will serve to make many of them more price sensitive.
In general, Spanish consumers, particularly younger ones, will keep paying more attention to the ingredients incorporated in the products they use and seek natural or organic ranges. Overall, this will result in a growing number of companies in beauty and personal care striving to launch more natural and less artificial products.
The importance of e-commerce as a distribution channel for oral care is likely to increase during the forecast period. While many Spanish consumers purchase oral care products (particularly toothbrushes and toothpaste) as part of their grocery shopping (modern grocery retailers remain the dominant distribution channel in oral care), a growing number of them are doing their grocery shopping online.
