However, while COVID-19 stimulated an increase in multivitamins, zinc and vitamin C, their sales have returned to pre-pandemic growth levels.
El Salvador saw relatively fewer restrictions during the pandemic compared to other countries in the region. In fact, many places, such as restaurants, were open with limited use of face masks during parts of 2021.
In terms of the consumer health market, traditional remedies have all but disappeared from sale, with only a small number of sellers available in traditional markets. However, these are sold without any restrictions.
It is common for consumers in El Salvador to self-medicate. In fact, the difficult economic situation in the country, exacerbated by the pandemic, has stimulated consumer demand for OTC in pharmacies, especially generics but also trusted brands.
In general, there is a good logistics infrastructure in the country with products easily reaching points of sale. However, in some areas, which are controlled by gangs, independent stores, drugstores and some delivery trucks have been subjected to extortion, though instances of this are on the decline.
OTC products are classified as free dispensing drugs and do not need to be sold via authorised pharmacies. However, these products must comply with the General Medicines Law and the General Regulation of the Law of Medications.
Vitamins and dietary supplements go through the same registration process as medicines with no changes occurring during the global health pandemic in 2020 and 2021. However, there are fewer regulations.
Greater awareness will help fuel demand for consumer health products over the forecast period. Since the pandemic, consumers have become more conscious about their health and are no longer delaying medical visits or ignoring symptoms or ailments.
