In 2022, hot drinks is finally seeing the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is having a positive impact on both the off- and on-trade. However, the on-trade in particular is performing well and seeing a strong recovery.
In 2022, hot drinks retain an important social and cultural role in Kuwait and this applies in particular to coffee. Despite prices being quite high, the product remains very popular, both for at-home consumption as well as at social gatherings and in the on-trade.
Kuwait has one of the highest per capita coffee consumption rates of any Middle Eastern country and tea consumption is also quite high. In particular, the popularity of the Turkish Americano continued to soar.
Coffee is the most popular category of hot drinks overall, while tea remains somewhat more popular among the low-income expatriate population, many of whom come from tea-drinking countries such as Egypt and India, for example. Many of these consumers will generally prefer loose tea to tea bags due to the superior taste and better value for money that these products represent.
Kuwait is a compact and well-connected country with a modern road network and easy access to ports. Moreover, there are no major infrastructure or security issues in Kuwait that would have any influence on the logistics and transportation operations of hot drinks companies or inhibit the ability of consumers to obtain hot drinks in stores and consumer foodservice outlets.
Over the forecast period, hot drinks will continue to benefit from the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as younger consumers socialise more and consume coffee while doing so. Both on- and off-sales will grow, with the latter being preferred by more affluent consumers with wider disposable incomes.
