During the review period prior to the onset of the pandemic, retail volume sales of hot drinks were expanding at a robust rate, supported by urbanisation, population growth, and a buoyant economy, but they were flat in 2020 and 2021 as the economic shock of the pandemic made many Ivorians more price sensitive. Retail volume sales began to expand again at the end of 2021 and now in 2022, however, the category now faces a new set of challenges due to the global inflation rates and fuel price hikes.
In 2022, inflation was on the rise in 2022, exceeding nearly 10% on some hot drink products. This inflation has put pressure on many households across the country, and many have reduced their spending on non-essential items such as imported coffees and teas.
Despite growing interest in hot drinks in Côte d’Ivoire, per capita consumption of coffee, tea and other hot drinks remains relatively low. Coffee consumption started during the colonial period and generally, it is only more affluent consumers who tend to drink coffee regularly.
Côte d’Ivoire has a youthful population structure, with a median age of 19 years in 2022. However, it is gradually rising, as life expectancy at birth rises and fertility rates fall.
Despite major improvements in recent years, many parts of the country’s road network are still underdeveloped, which can present challenges for companies seeking to distribute goods to some parts of the country. Gaining access to remote rural areas (particularly in the north of the country) can be particularly problematic with many such roads currently under construction or in need of repair.
There will be no more than modest growth in retail volume sales of hot drinks during the forecast period, with tea remaining the top performer, as demand for it is much less mature. Urbanisation, population expansion and an anticipated post-pandemic economic rebound will be the main drivers of growth in hot drinks.
