The rate of growth in current value sales of retail tissue was virtually unchanged between 2019 and 2021. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic had both positive and negative effects on demand that largely cancelled each other out.
COVID-19 also led to a significant decline in demand for retail tissue, particularly paper tableware – napkins and tablecloths – from such businesses as restaurants and hotels. These businesses mainly purchase these products from retail outlets.
Led by Archi Sarl’s Oran and SOTICAM SA’s Sandra brands, local brands continued to lead in retail tissue during 2021. However, “others” (small players) continued to account for almost half of retail tissue current value sales in 2021.
Current value sales of retail tissue will continue to exhibit strong growth during the forecast period. As the threat posed by COVID-19 fades, the stockpiling of toilet paper that occurred in 2020 will not be repeated.
The forecast period will also see a modest acceleration in the rate of unit price growth, as value-added products grow in popularity, particularly among more affluent consumers. For example, Archi Sarl launched giant paper towels under its Oran brand in 2020.
While private label products are available in retail tissue, their current value sales remained negligible in 2021. However, this could change during the forecast period, as the number of modern grocery retail outlets in Cameroon continues to expand.
