Retail tissue continued to record growth overall and across almost all categories in 2021. Boxed facial tissues and toilet paper specifically benefitted from many consumers still working from home in the year and generally spending more time at home, even when entertaining guests.
Despite the still much milder cold and flu season thanks to social distancing, increased health and hygiene measures and less time spent away from home, pocket handkerchiefs recorded strong growth in 2021. This was mainly due to consumers increasingly using them with disinfectant to wipe surfaces and hands etc.
Over the forecast period, retail tissue is set to record further growth, seeing a decent year-on-year average, as a result of changed and further changing usage patterns. More consumers are expected to keep and start using disposable paper products, such as facial tissues, paper towels and napkins, due to their high level of convenience and ease of use.
There is also value growth potential in new product launches catering to currently evolving trends and growing demands such as clean products (with no bleach or additives), sustainably produced and sourced products (tissues with bamboo fibre, tissues made from straw as planned to be introduced by Essity), recycled and recyclable materials and packaging. Also growing in popularity are products with designs or packaging (boxed facial tissues) that are more decorative or fit interior designs of consumers’ homes.
With regards to the competitive landscape or distribution channels, no major changes are to be expected over the forecast period. Consumers tend to stick to their trusted brands and hardly even switch between products of one brand unless the value add is substantial, as well as to their preferred and trusted retailers.
