Retail tissue recorded dynamic volume and current value growth in 2020, with many categories seeing an uplift in sales due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Stockpiling boosted growth, particularly for toilet paper, with consumers panic-buying this product through fear that the outbreak would impact supply issues, or that they would need to isolate for a long period of time.
In 2020, napkins and tablecloths experienced significant declines, because people stayed at home and did not entertain family and friends due to the pandemic. Following the return to normal daily life due to the high percentage of people vaccinated in the country, the consumption of these products rose significantly in 2021, with both categories seeing double-digit current value growth rates.
Kimberly-Clark Israel remained the dominant player in retail tissue in value terms in 2021, with its Lily, Nikol, Molett, Kleenex and Shmurat Teva brands. The company’s strong position is thanks to its extensive distribution, wide variety of high-quality brands, high prices, emphasis on marketing and occasional innovation.
Retail tissue is set to see solid although slowing volume growth in the forecast period, along with higher current value growth rates as prices continue to rise. Tablecloths is set to see the strongest retail volume and current value growth, mainly because it will still be recovering from the hit to sales seen in 2020.
Until recently, Israeli consumers were not particularly concerned with the environment. However, discussions on the topic are increasing in the country, and the general desire to care for the environment is rising.
Kimberly-Clark and Sano Bruno’s Enterprises are expected to continue to lead retail tissue in the forecast period, accounting for the majority of value share. These two companies’ success is based on well-established brands, a wide variety of products, wide distribution, and an occasional emphasis on marketing and innovation.
