As at-home consumption (over on-the-go) increased during the era of the pandemic, larger pack sizes became popular in gum – as well as in many other areas of snacks. This is because larger pack sizes can be more economical and are better for storing at home and sharing with friends and family.
One of the trends that has become increasingly important is the rationalisation of references, both on the industry side as well as on the distribution side. On the industry side, for example, Mondelez's strategy was to reduce its gum portfolio in order to focus on products which account for 80% of turnover.
What happens next in gum will largely depend on that happens next in the story of Mondelez and Perfetti Van Melle, with the Trident brand at the centre of the acquisition being the biggest gum brand in Portugal. It is expected that this acquisition will bring greater power to Perfetti Van Melle Group’s portfolio, although 2023 is likely to be a year of planning and strategy, in accordance with the objectives of the player.
