Coffee remains the most popular hot drinks category due to its cultural importance, although the socioeconomic crisis has led many people to consume less coffee, while many others have shifted to black tea, a much cheaper type of hot drink. Across all categories, consumers are trading down to cheaper options, although demand is now rising as the crisis eases and inbound tourism continues to boom, not least due to the huge numbers of expatriates returning to Lebanon for 2-8 weeks at a time.
2023 saw further moderate growth in volume sales of hot drinks in Lebanon as the industry continued to stabilise despite the continuous deterioration of Lebanon’s social, economic and financial situation. The re-dollarisation of the Lebanese pound during the year was a major factor promoting greater stability in Lebanon’s beleaguered financial sector, contributing to the improvements that were seen in commercial activity in the country’s hot drinks industry.
Coffee consumption remains deeply rooted in Lebanese social traditions. Lebanese, Turkish or Arabic coffee (depending on how each person refers to it) is an important part of socialising among local people and a drink of coffee is always offered at the end of any meal and during any social visit and few local people need much of an excuse to prepare and serve coffee to share with friends and family.
Despite the palpable sense of normality that swept through Lebanon during 2023, especially in Beirut and other parts of the country that are popular with foreign tourists, any relief that the country may have finally turned the corner was unfortunately little more than an illusion. Lebanon’s economic collapse continues, with no end in sight to the political deadlock or the crisis in the banking sector and the financial markets.
Lebanon’s economic crisis has exacerbated various deeply rooted infrastructure issues that were already making daily life quite challenging. The state of the country’s electricity supply is a major concern as power cuts that were already common have now evolved into a total blackout that has left the local population completely reliant on backup generators for electricity since the middle of 2021.
Slow but steady sales growth is likely to be seen in hot drinks in Lebanon over the forecast period, with even the most optimistic projections suggesting that the market unlikely to recover to pre-economic crisis sales levels before the end of 2024 at the absolute earliest. However, most commentators have mentioned that it would be more realistic to assume that the various challenges outlined above begin will remain in effect throughout 2024, making any kind of meaningful improvement in the situation for industry players highly unlikely.
