This signals that consumers were becoming more sophisticated and knowledgeable about the products they considered buying, with a longer decision-making curve due to extensive research.
It is not expected that colour cosmetics in Hong Kong will be able to recover to the pre-COVID-19 level of value sales by 2026, due to an expected permanent shift in consumer behaviour. Despite the fact that social occasions will return once the pandemic calms down, increased time spent at home due to flexible working arrangements will reduce the need for make-up in general, which means it is expected that there will be less consumption amongst local consumers.
Hong Kong consumers have a general trust in Japanese beauty products. Influenced by Japanese cultural exports such as music, drama and animation, consumers have confidence in the scrupulous quality checks and the authenticity of the claimed efficacy and safety of products from Japanese manufacturers and brand owners.
Men’s colour cosmetics gained traction in both mainland China and Japan after COVID-19, as more young men were conscious of their appearance when joining virtual meetings. This group of young men are keen to use facial make-up such as BB creams and lightly tinted lip balms to retouch their appearance in a natural way.
