In the first months of 2021, pandemic-related restrictions remained in place and most people continued to work from home, placing a downwards pressure on sales of colour cosmetics.
Lip products sales declined during the COVID-19 lockdowns, but they began to rise again in the latter half of 2021 as vaccination rates rose and mask mandates were gradually relaxed. The COVID-19 lockdowns had a lasting effect on beauty habits, however, as many women now prefer a more natural look and wear less make-up.
E-commerce has made outstanding growth in share of distribution during the pandemic, as reduced access to conventional retail channels, and in particular health and beauty specialist retailers, has shunted more consumers online. While growth in the channel slowed down through 2021, it remained positive.
Over the forecast period, colour cosmetics is anticipated to portray robust growth. As pandemic-related restrictions and mask mandates are lifted, demand for colour cosmetics is anticipated to fully recover, and retail value sales are expected to reach pre-pandemic levels over 2022-23.
Younger consumers, and in particular the teenage cohort will remain the strongest growth driver of mass colour cosmetics over the forecast period. These consumers are increasingly adopting a more intense beauty regime at a younger age, heavily influenced by social media.
Colour cosmetics, in line with other beauty and personal care categories, is set to see an increase in green and other sustainable trends over the forecast period, especially in in the premium segment of colour cosmetics. Increasingly, luxury beauty brands are positioning their products in line with ethical consumption and production practices such as cruelty free cosmetics, vegan products, natural ingredients, or entirely food-based ingredients in lip make-up.
