Premium colour cosmetics is still the smaller segment of colour cosmetics in Slovakia but in 2021 gain further ground as its value sales grew faster than those of mass colour cosmetics, while both started to recover from the losses sustained in 2020 as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19. The pandemic has accelerated trends towards more natural make-up and less make-up.
In 2021, the obligation to wear face masks continued, hence Slovak women opted for bolder eyes and lighter transfer-free foundations or BB/CC creams. Since most beauty salons stayed closed for a prolonged period of the year, lash extensions were mainly unavailable, but there was growing demand for fake lashes or lash-lifting mascaras.
Store-based retailing remains the main distribution channel for colour cosmetics in Slovakia. However, similarly to all other categories of beauty and personal care, the shift towards online retailing is visible in colour cosmetics with e-commerce shops gaining more share.
Colour cosmetics in Slovakia jumped into a swift rebound in 2021, which is likely to slow down in 2022 but remain at rather healthy levels. Further evolution of sales will no longer be strongly impacted by further waves of COVID-19, related restrictions or store closures.
Clean beauty refers to the use of all-natural ingredients, and with a growing focus on wellness, there has been a shift towards brands and products that fit these criteria. Natural ingredients are considered more ethical and skin-friendly than those that are artificially made.
In the forecast period, colour cosmetics companies will invest more in their digital presence and in developing new sustainable products. The ever-increasing demand for healthier products leads manufacturers to innovate and retailers to provide the availability of natural and organic products.
