Colour cosmetics has been the category most drastically affected by the pandemic, with home seclusion, work from home, reduced socialising opportunities and mask-wearing taking a severe toll on sales. What is more, beauty specialist retailers and departments stores, the key channels for premium products, but also for mass products, were closed or had restricted access (to vaccinated people/with display of negative tests).
The pandemic and its repercussions have taken a severe toll on all categories of colour cosmetics in Greece. Most affected (directly affected by mask-wearing) is lip products, which showed only slight recovery during 2021.
The retail value shares of key players in colour cosmetics were generally stable in 2021. Market leader, L’Oréal Hellas SA, managed to increase its share further in the year, launching numerous new product developments and using dynamic promotion as an answer to the COVID-19 crisis.
In Greece, colour cosmetics is set to achieve a slow comeback over the course of the forecast period. Sales will bounce back post-COVID-19, yet at a slow rate, following a “vigilance period” during which COVID-19 will continue to impact everyday life and hence consumers’ willingness/ability to use colour cosmetics.
Both mass and premium brands of colour cosmetics are expected to grow in the forecast period, both expanding online (online sales will continue to steadily expand) and reinventing their respective traditional touchpoints offline. Mass brands are set to keep expanding within supermarkets after the pandemic is over, having benefited from the fact that supermarkets were the only walk-in channel that remained functional during the country’s lockdown.
Trends in colour cosmetics over the forecast period will revolve around multi-usage products, sustainable packaging, skinification (make-up that does good for the skin) and bridging with skin care. A key trend will thus be facial care based on trusted natural ingredients (eg aloe, orange, pomegranate) for use before and after make-up.
