Having plunged by more than a quarter during 2020, there was no more than a partial recovery in retail constant value sales (2021 prices) of colour cosmetics during 2021. Demand for colour cosmetics was hit particularly hard by COVID-19 restrictions during 2020, with facemasks required in both indoor and outdoor public spaces for much of the year.
Since the onset of COVID-19, a growing number of Spanish consumers have reduced their use of colour cosmetics and increased their use of skin care on the basis that having good skin is the best make-up. With a more natural look increasingly fashionable, make-up is increasingly perceived a product used as a final touch, which is having a negative effect on retail value sales.
L’Oréal España SA remained the leading player in colour cosmetics in 2021 with its L'Oréal Paris brand, just ahead of Coty Beauty Spain SL in terms of value share. L’Oréal España SA’s brands are widely distributed and backed by significant marketing investment.
With the mandatory wearing of facemasks in indoor public places finally ended in spring 2022 (even if they remain mandatory on public transport), the early part of the review period is set to see a robust revival in demand for facial make-up, colour cosmetics sets/kits and particularly lip products. Growth in retail constant value sales will also be supported by an increase in socialising and an anticipated post-pandemic economic rebound.
E-commerce surged in popularity as a distribution channel for colour cosmetics during 2020, and its retail value share continued to increase during 2021 – albeit at a much more modest rate. Local consumers, particularly younger ones, are increasingly comfortable shopping for colour cosmetics online, appreciating the value for money, wide product offer and convenience of this channel.
With sustainability increasingly important to local consumers, particularly younger ones. As a result, brands with natural ingredients and recycled and recyclable packaging are set to grow in popularity during the forecast period.
