Colour cosmetics was hit particularly hard by the event of COVID-19 in the previous year, due to a plethora of factors. These range from social distancing measures, with more people working from home and not socialising, thus resulting in fewer making-up and grooming occasions, to the closure of non-essential stores – particularly beauty specialist retailers.
During 2021, some product areas in colour cosmetics fared better than others. Trends that emerged during the review period, such as an inclination toward a more natural appearance, continued in 2021.
L'Oréal Belgilux SA maintained its strong lead in colour cosmetics in 2021, thanks to its wide array of brands and products in both premium and mass segments. In brand terms, the player also holds the two top places, with Gemey/Maybelline and L'Oréal Paris.
Although the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions helped colour cosmetics sales bounce back from the steep decline registered in the previous year, the product area is expected to see a slow recovery, with sales forecasted to reach pre-pandemic levels only by 2026. The health and wellbeing trend is likely to deter women from using colour cosmetics that might be harmful to their health, benefiting clean beauty brands instead.
Footfall in stores is not likely to return to pre-pandemic levels before 2023. This is another reason why colour cosmetics is not likely to regain demand lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The naturalness trend of “less is more” was evident in colour cosmetics in the review period, benefitting sub-categories such as BB/CC creams, for example. Moving forwards, it is expected that such trends will return and innovations in this area are expected within multi-use skin care.
