Colour cosmetics was one of the hardest hit areas of beauty and personal care by the COVID-19 pandemic. With consumers finding themselves stuck at home, the incentive to purchase these products was significantly diminished.
Eye make-up registered the most dynamic performance in colour cosmetics in 2021, slowly recovering from the strong decline in demand during the previous year. There was a strong recovery in demand for mascara which recorded the highest value and volume growth rate in overall colour cosmetics in 2021.
The positionings of players in colour cosmetics remained largely unchanged. Despite the fierce competition, multinational player L’Oréal Österreich continued to lead in 2021.
The COVID-19 situation is Austria is showing signs of improvement with the country in the process of rolling out its vaccination programme. As restrictions are eased and consumers start to return to the workplace, as well as socialising again, this should fuel a slow but steady recovery in sales of colour cosmetics.
Despite the relative maturity of colour cosmetics there is still seen to be plenty of potential for further growth over the forecast period. New formats, colours, sets/kits for mascara, eye shadow and lip gloss, packaging types and innovative dispensers and closures are just some of the examples.
For some consumers there is likely to be a short-term surge in demand for colour cosmetics once restrictions are lifted, with younger women in particular likely to be keen to shake off the cobwebs of home seclusion and try out new looks. The ability to try products in store and to receive beauty consultations from sales staff will also be another driver of growth, with retailers likely to go to great lengths to kickstart a recovery.
