Current value sales of colour cosmetics benefited from COVID-19 in 2021 as in 2020 as the closure of duty-free shops saw consumers switch to retail outlets. Traditionally, Norwegians spend heavily in duty free shops, but restrictions on travel led to the forced closure of duty-free retailers causing duty-free sales to plummet.
Lip products displayed the strongest current value growth in 2021 compared to other categories as mask wearing became more relaxed and shopping returned through traditional retail outlets. Sales also improved due to a rise in impulse purchases of lip products.
Nail products saw a decline in current values sales in 2021 after a boom year in 2020 when Norwegian women spend more time at home and thus spent more time to doing manicures and pedicures. As beauty salons reopened in 2021, demand for nail products subsided although total current value sales remained well above pre-pandemic levels.
Colour cosmetics is expected to see a decline in current value sales in 2022 and 2023, predominantly as a result of foreign travel resuming and a return to colour cosmetics shopping through duty free, border trade and overseas retail channels. Norwegians have become even more accustomed to using e-commerce channels since the start of COVID-19, both for colour cosmetics and other beauty and personal care products.
E-commerce will continue to increase in importance over the forecast period putting further pressure on manufacturers to engage with and nurture consumers online. Social media engagement and influencer tutorials and reviews have become increasingly important and this trend will only intensify in the forecast period.
Natural, clean beauty and sustainability trends will remain highly influential in colour cosmetics over the forecast period. While product performance is the main criteria for selecting colour cosmetics, the re-assurance of clean products that remove controversial ingredients, and natural products with eco-credentials such as being organic or vegan, is in second place.
