2021 was another difficult year for colour cosmetics with most categories continuing to post declines in current value terms. With consumers continuing to spend a significant amount of time at home for both work and leisure consumers did not see the need to renew the make-up they already owned and which went unused in 2020.
The use of face masks since the start of the pandemic has had a negative impact on demand for a range of colour cosmetics, with consumers having less incentive to wear make-up when their face is hidden. Nonetheless, in an effort to sustain demand some players developed “No transfer products” in response to the increased use of protective face masks.
Many brands and retailers are investing in new digital strategies, such as augmented reality (AR), in order to offer more personalised virtual shopping experiences. However, while e-commerce retains a significantly larger share than before the pandemic, consumers did start to return to brick-and-mortar stores in 2021.
Colour cosmetics looks set for a bright future as fears around COVID-19 subside and consumers return to more normalised behaviour. As people start to pursue more active work and social lives outside the home this should encourage them to return to more thorough make-up routines, thus driving demand.
The rising interest in self-care is encouraging the use of skin care properties in colour cosmetics, which is blurring the boundaries between the two categories. For this reason, it is expected that new product launches will focus on colour cosmetics with skin care properties, such as the addition of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and SPF protection.
The green and natural trends are having a strong impact on colour cosmetics with these set to become even more prominent as the forecast period progresses. The COVID-19 pandemic has made consumers more conscious about the impact their purchasing decisions have on their health and on the environment, with this encouraging many people to look for clean and ethical products.
