Colour cosmetics registered an improved performance in 2021 recording growth in retail volume and current value terms after the strong contraction seen in 2020. However, the category’s recovery was limited largely to the first few months of 2021 when the COVID-19 situation was more stable.
Direct selling remains the leading distribution channel for colour cosmetics in Uruguay. However, despite returning to growth, direct selling companies were unable to record a full recovery in 2021.
Lip products registered one of the best performances in 2021, recording double-digit growth in current value terms. Nonetheless, it must be considered that the category also registered one of the worst performances in 2020 because of the widespread use of face masks.
Thanks to the success of Uruguay’s vaccination programme and the easing of restrictions colour cosmetics is expected to see a relatively quick recovery, with retail volume sales expected to return to pre-COVID-19 levels by 2023. In 2022, it is expected that there will be a strong rebound in sales with the end of restrictions, with many consumers likely to be keen to replenish or update their old supply of make-up.
E-commerce is seen to have strong potential within colour cosmetics, with the online channel being likely to take further share over the forecast period. The younger generations in particular are increasingly embracing online shopping, perceiving it to offer better value and more convenience than store-based retailers and direct selling.
Over the forecast period local retailers will once again have to compete with duty free shops offering premium colour cosmetics brands such as Lancôme or Mac. Prior to COVID-19 Uruguayans would usually buy premium brands in duty free shops, where these products are often cheaper.
