Overall, colour cosmetics witnessed a strong decline in retail volume and current value sales in 2020, due to the exigencies of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The measures introduced to stem the tide of the virus, such as lockdown and social distancing, remote working and limitations on social occasions, militated against the need or desire to use colour cosmetics.
Nail products was less affected by COVID-19, although some people wore gloves to minimise the risk of infection. Consumers continued to use nail polish, for example, for pampering, as well as aesthetic, reasons at a stressful time.
As sampling and trying out colour cosmetics in-store was not an option due to COVID-19 measures, consumers tended to experiment less with new brands or products, but rather to stick with familiar ones and simply repurchase them when required. While the situation improved in 2021, concerns over contagion and social distancing and other restrictions in stores meant that main challenges for companies in this period remained the pushing of novelties and alternatives and providing of creative solutions to pique the interest of the consumer in their brands and products.
While mass brands have long been readily available through e-commerce, COVID-19 accelerated the shift to online sales, with many beauty specialist retailers closed during lockdown. This, in some ways, lessened the negative impact of COVID-19.
Gel nail polish was a huge trend in Israel over the review period, with the long-lasting characteristic appealing to consumers, many of whom have started to visit professional nail artists to do their nails regularly. While such outlets were closed for part of 2020, nail artists/beauty nail centres is a fast-growing format in the country, although this discourages retail sales of nail products.
Other trends are predicted to include thick and full eyebrows to boost sales in other lash and brow make-up. Thick and full eyebrows is a desired look and many women colour their eyebrows with either designated mascara or pencils to provide a richer look.
