The situation improved for players in tissue and hygiene in Iraq in 2023 as the revaluation of the Iraqi dinar gave relief from exchange rate anomalies, skyrocketing prices, infrastructure issues and razor-thin margins. Iraqi consumers meanwhile became interested in a wider range of tissue and hygiene products, with value-added products outperforming the basic, generic items that dominate sales across the industry due to greater stability and rising incomes as the national oil industry thrives.
Consumption of all types of tissue and hygiene products is growing across all geographical areas of Iraq and this trend applies to all consumer segments. As a result, penetration levels are now much higher than in the past.
The formation of a new government and cabinet in Iraq during 2022 brought an end to political stasis and this meant that 2023 brought huge relief for the local population after many months of political uncertainty. Nonetheless, despite these relatively positive political developments, the social, economic and political situation in Iraq remains unstable and uncertain and this has discouraged investment.
Rapid urbanisation remains one of the most influential background trends on Iraq’s tissue and hygiene industry. There are many factors influencing and driving this urbanisation, with the shake-up of Iraq’s politics, economics and society that has followed the cessation of armed conflict creating the ideal preconditions for rapid and permanent urbanisation.
Rising logistics costs over the course of the review period has put huge pressure on the margins of the country’s tissue and hygiene players, resulting in significant unit price increases across all categories. However, with most of the low-cost imports that dominate in most tissue and hygiene categories coming from Turkey and Iran, the depreciations that have been seen in the respective exchange values of the Turkish lira and Iranian rial meant that relatively muted price increases were seen for imports from these two countries.
As the market is growing and the government also has clear economic policies, so it is expected that with local investments, the market to be limited to the current flood of imports for all the categories. Also, even if there is no production in the country, it is expected that the government will help suppliers which are close to the government and political parties to start creating local production.
