The arrival of COVID-19 in the Balkans during the first half of 2020 was quickly followed by swift and decisive action by governments across the region and Bosnia and Herzegovina was no exception. By the third week of March, stay-at-home orders were in place across the country, with all schools and many workplaces closed, intercity and inter-regional travel heavily restricted and borders closed to non-residents.
As of 10 May 2020, Bosnia and Herzegovina has seen around 100 deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,100 cases. A state of emergency was introduced on 17 March, with a curfew imposed from 2000-0500hrs.
Over the course of 2019, the favourable socioeconomic trends that underpinned positive growth in tissue and hygiene throughout the review period remained in evidence. In particular, the ongoing development of the economy of Bosnia and Herzegovina has resulted in the emergence of an affluent and sophisticated urban middle-class, mainly in the national capital Sarajevo but increasingly in other major urban areas as well.
As in earlier years of the review period, 2019 saw local player Violeta doo and major multinational Procter & Gamble doo battle it out at the top of the leader board in tissue and hygiene in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Violeta’s strategy of reducing unit prices across its product range to compete more effectively with rival local and regional brands and private label has undermined the company’s value growth potential, handing Procter & Gamble an advantage in value share terms.
The negative impact of COVID-19 in 2020 has interrupted a long-term positive growth trend for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tissue and hygiene industry. Although the impact of COVID-19 has not been particularly negative in most categories, the economic recession which is expected to ensue during 2020 and 2021 has the potential to undo a lot of the progress that was made in the industry during the review period.
