Hot Drinks in Latin America

March 2024

Volume sales of hot drinks returned to recording positive growth in Latin America in 2023, following the slight decline seen a year earlier. In value terms, with costs rising against a backdrop of high inflation, growth was stronger. Coffee continues to lead value sales in hot drinks in Latin America, although other plant-based hot drinks, which includes the traditionally popular yerba mate product in a number of countries, continues to have a major presence in the region.

Nestlé launches “Product Battle” tool to enable nutritional comparisons

Nestlé launched the “Product Battle” tool, allowing customers to compare the nutritional profile of the company’s products with the market average across various categories. This initiative was a response to the growing consumer demand for transparency and healthier choices, trying to reflect Nestlé’s commitment to healthier and more nutritious options.

E-commerce share remains limited in Latin America

Although e-commerce shares have been expanding in recent years, especially with the onset of the pandemic, they still remain quite small generally, with a regional high of 8% in Colombia but a regional average of less than 2%. Supermarkets/hypermarkets are the major force in retail distribution, although small local grocers still play a key role in many countries.

Yerba mate reigns supreme in Uruguay

Yerba mate remains an important product in the region, with Latin America home to the top three countries in terms of per capita consumption of this product. It accounts for more than half of hot drinks sales in Uruguay and over a third of retail value in Argentina. Although it is an increasingly mature category in these countries, it also currently aligns with consumer demand for value-driven purchases in an Argentinian market in which inflation has been rampant.
