Key findings

US major leagues and European football reign supreme

Five major US leagues and five European football leagues dominate The League Index ranking in 2022, with the NFL continuing to maintain its position as the most commercially attractive league globally. Top 10 spots in The Club Index 2022 are taken by football clubs from five major European football leagues, with Manchester United taking the lead.

Top performers illustrate how digital innovation and tradition work together

Despite leagues and clubs with a strong legacy and heritage dominating the top spots in the indices, the digital footprint of sports properties is growing in importance. Sports properties that keep expanding their digital presence are the ones able to ensure their resilience, and maintain growth and commercial viability, thus retaining or improving their index positions as a result. Paris Saint-Germain recorded the highest social media growth among clubs in 2021, and has entered top 10 club list. The Premier League has overtaken La Liga as the most followed competition globally.

Success also hinges on the socioeconomic potential of a sports property’s home market

The economic and demographic fabric of a country/city has the power to hinder or help league and club performance. Sports clubs based in San Francisco Bay Area possess the strongest economic scores, determined by high purchasing power and a willingness to spend on sports and entertainment. The sheer size and young age of India’s population contributes to the strength of the Indian Premier League's following and its attractiveness to investors.

Top sports properties secure the lion’s share of sponsorship

A good position in The League or Club Index can lead to a more lucrative sponsorship deal. The annual value of sponsorship deals in the Premier League – ranked number one in Europe – accounts for approximately 40% of total annual value of deals across the top five European football leagues. Five top performing Premier League clubs in the index capture two thirds of the total annual value of the league’s sponsorship deals.
