About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • At a time when the Brazilian economy is struggling, and consumers are rethinking their consumption behaviour, fast food operators are putting a great deal of effort into trying to offer value for money options, and continue to attract the attention of consumers, especially from the C and D social strata. Promotional prices are constantly being offered by huge chains, such as McDonald’s under the campaign “Pequenos preços McDonald’s” (Low prices at McDonald’s) and “Barato do dia” (Bargain of the day) from Subway, whereby a different selected sandwich has a low price according to the day of the week. Such campaigns are expected to be more common in the current macroeconomic scenario.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • McDonald’s (GBO) continued to lead chained fast food with a 30% value share in 2014, although this was a slight decline in share compared with the previous year. This was due to the increasing competition from other fast food chains, such as Burger King and Subway (Doctor’s Associates), despite the opening of 50 outlets in 2014. Its strategy for the coming years is to bring more consumers into its existing outlets; it is therefore expected that there will only be a few openings in 2015-2016, with priority being given to new shopping malls.

PROSPECTS

  • Fast food is expected to increase by a CAGR of 6% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period; behind the 10% CAGR seen in the review period. Maturity, combined with the uncertain economic scenario, will contribute to this slower performance. C and D social strata consumers, mainly, are rethinking their buying habits when it comes to eating out, and price will have a key role in the final decision. Promotions and discounts on different days of the week should also encourage more consumers to maintain a consistent and dynamic pace of visits when eating out, rather than decreasing their frequency of visits.
