With COVID-19 restrictions put in place by the national and regional authorities in Germany, including home seclusion and remote working/learning as well as the closure of foodservice outlets, for dine-in at least, consumers had more time to spend preparing and cooking meals at home. With home-dining increasing, this boosted sales of dinner mixes, which recorded very dynamic growth in both 2020 and 2021, benefiting unit volumes of folding cartons, flexible plastic and other packaging used in the packaging of dinner mixes.
Prepared salads were recording strong growth during the pandemic, in both 2020 and 2021. This was in line with the growing health and wellness trend and as consumers started to diet and eat more healthily to try and lose any weight they gained during the lockdowns.
Dinner mixes are set to continue recording dynamic growth in packaging unit volume terms over the forecast period. This comes in the wake of the boost to home-cooking seen among consumers during the pandemic, given these products offer convenience and time-savings.
