There are currently no store cards in circulation in Hungary. Magyar Cetelem Bank stopped offering store cards in 2008 and no retailers have since signalled any intention to relaunch such services. Instead, retailers are collaborating with banks to launch co-branded credit cards and then tie these credit products to their respective loyalty schemes, thus enabling them to offer very favourable terms and conditions while still strengthening their relationships with their customers. A store card (also known as a retailer or private label card) contains a “pay later” component and revolving line of credit similar to credit cards. However, store cards must contain usage limited to specific stores within a predefined retail group unlike retailer co-branded cards. Co-branded credit cards issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions fall into the credit card category.
