In 2021, cafés along with specialist coffee shops recorded positive value sales growth, but it will take a while longer for bars to see a recovery in value sales. Demand for coffee remained stable during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cafés and specialist coffee shops have been quick to adapt to the new normal following the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Starbucks Philippines announced the nationwide availability of Mobile Order and Pay on iOS and Android devices, a new feature of their mobile app that allows customers to place and pay for their order in advance and pick it up at any Starbucks store.
Cafés/bars are also strengthening their digital presence, online sales and delivery services to adapt to the new normal in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Bo’s Coffee launched its e-commerce site through which the company sells coffee beans, baked goods and merchandise.
Cafés/bars may find it difficult to reach pre-lockdown levels of current retail value sales in the forecast period. In fact, cafés/bars might not even reach current retail value sales levels from 2019 by 2025.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic which is still likely to continue to linger in 2022 at least, several brands from neighbouring countries are announcing their entry into the Philippines. Japan's Omotesando Koffee opened its first coffee shop in the Philippines in August 2021, while Hong Kong’s The Coffee Academic opened a month later.
In terms of leading players, Starbucks will continue to lead in the forecast period. Furthermore, it will likely be one of the fastest recovering players since it has a strong foothold in the country.

Cafés/Bars
This category encompasses all establishments where the focus is on drinking (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages). While a wide variety of snacks and full meals are offered, it is not uncommon for consumers to only order a drink. As a general rule, establishments deriving 50% of their income or more from the sale of drinks are included here.
