TRENDS

  • Under the “Otthon Melege” programme launched by the government in 2014, as many as 40,000 households received financing up to a limit of 50% of the purchase price of a new laundry appliance. To qualify for financing under this programme, the new device is required to be 10% more energy efficient than the applicant’s existing home laundry appliance. The programme earmarked a budget of HUF1 billion to financing the replacement of old washing machines in the country. The amount of financing available towards the purchase of new appliances ranges from HUF25,000 to HUF45,000, depending on the energy efficiency of the appliance purchased. Based on the statistics of the National Development Ministry, as many as 94% of Hungarian households have washing machines at home, of which 50% are more than eight years old.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2015, Whirlpool Hungaria Kft accounted for a leading retail volume sales share of 22% in home laundry appliances in Hungary. The long warranty period offered for Whirlpool washing machines (10-20 years on the engine) ensured that the company remained the undisputed leader in the category, as it experienced the largest increase in retail volume sales share in 2015. The company’s innovative Whirlpool Supreme Care models offer high capacity, are rated A+++ in terms of energy efficiency, offer 20% savings on energy costs and are extremely silent. The long warranty period offered by the company made the Whirlpool brand more competitive during the replacement programme offered by the government, as many consumers looked to purchase higher-positioned home laundry appliances to be used over a longer period of time. This offer made their models more competitive in comparison with the second-positioned Electrolux’s portfolio of brands.

PROSPECTS

  • Retail volume and value sales at constant 2015 prices of home laundry appliances are both expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% over the forecast period. With the exception of semi-automatic washing machines, retail volume sales of which are set to decline at a CAGR of 4% over the forecast period, all categories in home laundry appliances are likely to grow steadily over the forecast period. The government support programme is expected to be extended and new tenders will be launched, boosting demand for more energy-efficient home laundry appliances. Higher-capacity home laundry appliances are expected to crowd out lower-capacity machines, as the latter are significantly less energy-efficient.
