Better for you beverages records stable growth despite difficult year

After a difficult 2017 due to El Niño phenomenon and the beginning of political instability, 2018 did not bring the recovery that was expected. The weather, with a colder summer and stronger winter, did not help push higher volume sales for the largest category of BFY reduced sugar beverages, which usually depends on warm summer temperatures.

Government initiatives to combat obesity fuel growth

Government efforts to fight obesity and avoid its expansion in the country led to two key events in 2018. First, the increase of the Selective Consumption Tax, which taxes industries or products that have negative impacts on the country, such as tobacco or alcoholic drinks.

Ajeper strengthens leadership of better for you beverages

Ajeper retained its leadership from 2017 after taking overtaking CBC Peruana SAC. Ajeper continued to gain value share within the category due to the strength of its leading brand Free Tea Light.

Sprite Zero remains only brand present for The Coca-Cola Co

After taking over the distribution of Sprite Zero for The Coca-Cola Co from Corp Lindley SA in 2017, Arca Continental Lindley retained its third ranking in 2018, with low value share. The global player’s other brands, namely Inca Kola Light and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar ,were no longer available in Peru under better for you beverages after previously holding high share for The Coca-Cola Co.

Key players invest in reformulating products to adapt to new regulations

As a consequence of the discussion surrounding the labelling law, companies invested in reformulating their products to avoid having octagons printed on packaging displaying messages such as “high in sugar”. This turned out to be even more important as it helped some of them to avoid being impacted or reduce the impact of the increase in the Selective Consumption Tax, which was unexpected for the industry.
