Free from dairy continued to record dynamic growth rates in 2021. In part, this was the result of its emergence from a low base and the relative novelty of these products in Chile.
Free from lactose milk continued to record double-digit growth rates in 2021. This was mainly because consumers have increasingly shifted towards free from lactose variants driven by the increase in common food allergies and intolerances diagnosed by specialists.
Free from meat continued to record dynamic growth rates in 2021, mainly driven by increasing demand for vegetarian “hamburgers”. While vegetarian and vegan diets are growing in popularity in Chile, the main factor for growth in demand for these products is consumers eating less meat and seafood, rather than entirely eliminating these products from their diets.
Free from meat is predicted to record a positive performance over the course of the forecast period, with vegetarian “hamburgers” set to be the main driver of this. The dynamism shown by the category over the review period is expected to continue, as an increasing number of consumers adopt the habit of eating less meat, leading to increasing competition on terms of brands and products emerging.
Free from lactose is expected to continue to grow over the forecast period but at a much slower rate compared to the review period as it starts to mature. Most of the major dairy brands in Chile already compete in this space, including Loncoleche, Soprole with Zerolacto, Surlat, Colun, and even private label lines such as Lider Zer0% Lactosa from Walmart Chile and Cuisine & Co from Cencosud Retail.
Free from dairy milk will continue to see a positive performance over the forecast period, as an increasing number of consumers are convinced by the benefits of dairy-free alternatives for health reasons, as well as the rising number of Chileans following a vegan diet or who are concerned about the environmental impact of dairy farming. Regarding the different options of free from dairy milk available, other milk alternatives is expected to continue to penetrate the category, while soy drinks is likely to lose ground.
