The soft drinks space looked set to continue to drive the decline of naturally healthy beverages in 2021. This can be explained by the weight of naturally healthy bottled water and naturally healthy superfruit juice, two of the largest segments in overall naturally healthy beverages.
NH fruit/herbal tea saw dynamic growth in 2020 as the strong rise in demand for hot drinks for home consumption combined with rising consumer health-awareness, a desire to control caffeine intake and increasing interest in products containing natural ingredients. Despite the marked rise in retail sales in the previous year, NH fruit/herbal tea looked set to see continued strong growth in 2021.
Nestlé Waters France SAS remains the largest player in naturally healthy beverages thanks to the ongoing popularity and strength of NH bottled water in the overall category. However, the player’s Perrier brand ranks second behind Cristaline from Neptune SA, which has consistently increased its share over the review period.
NH fruit/vegetable juice is expected to see a poorer performance over the forecast period than over the previous five years. This can be explained by the bad press that juice has been receiving in the French media in recent years because of its high sugar content.
The trend towards rising concerns about plastic waste slowed slightly in 2020, as sanitation and hygiene concerns took precedence in the pandemic. However, during the forecast period, as COVID-19 becomes a managed fact of life, concerns about plastic pollution are set to become more prominent again.
NH green tea is expected to see continued growth over the forecast period as it benefits from a positive image amongst consumers who see it as a healthy product appreciated for its antioxidant functions. The health and wellness trend has been further enhanced by the experiences of the COVID-19 crisis.
