Demand for organic beverages remains quite limited in Russia. While retail current value sales rose for the first time in five years during 2021, this increase was marginal.
Retail current value sales of organic hot drinks remains negligible. However, international players continue to launch organic hot drinks in Russia.
In 2020, Federal Law 280 “On Organic Products” entered into force. This introduced special labelling requirements for organic products.
Although consumer awareness of organic beverages is growing, the rate of growth in retail current value sales is expected to be no more than modest throughout the forecast period. Within organic juice, demand will continue to shift from organic nectars (25-99% juice) to organic 100% juice, with retail current value sales of the former continuing to decline.
Organic beverages could become more affordable to local consumers if organic agriculture developed on a wider scale in Russia. Some companies are already planting organic apple orchards.
The government is eager to encourage the consumption of organic beverages from the perspectives of both public health and economic development. For example, it wants to oblige retail chains to allocate shelves for organic products in their stores – something that are unlikely to do on their own, at least for the foreseeable future.

Organic Beverages
Certified organic products are those which have been produced, stored, processed, handled and marketed in accordance with precise technical specifications (standards) and certified as "organic" by a certification body such as the Soil Association in the UK, the European Union or the US Department of Agriculture. It is important to note that an organic label applies to the production process, ensuring that the product has been produced and processed in an ecologically sound manner. The organic label is therefore a production process claim as opposed to a product quality claim. Note: For organic products to be included, the organic aspect needs to form a significant part of the overall positioning/marketing of the product, including the organic certification label in the packaging. For product category definitions please refer to the definitions section (can be found under the "Help" section on Passport) for the respective system: Packaged Food, Hot Drinks, Soft Drinks.
