Pre-paid cards are experiencing fast growth and are expected to continue expanding, as there are still a large number of people, who, for a variety of different reasons, are unbanked, but need to transfer money or want access to e-commerce. Pre-paid cards enable the user to make purchases online or in an establishment that only accepts payment with digital media as well as to send and receive money – in fact, the user can now do almost anything that is possible with a credit or debit card, but does not need to be a client of a financial institution.
Initiatives on public transport have contributed to the fast expansion of closed loop pre-paid cards since their first appearance in 2010. One major example is the Lima Pass card, which allows users to pay across various forms of transport, including the city’s metro network as well as the Metropolitano bus services.
Employee benefits cards are one of the main uses in open loop pre-paid cards, as they allow companies not only to provide benefits to their employees at a lower cost, but also to control and improve company expenditure.
Open loop pre-paid cards in Peru have only two operators, Visa and Mastercard, with Visa the clear leader, as it is in debit and credit cards. In a relatively new category, coverage is fundamental to gaining a presence, benefiting Visa, which already dominates card operations in large parts of the country.
Pro Transporte, with its closed loop Metropolitano Pass, is the biggest issuer and operator of pre-paid cards in circulation. It started using the card for the main transport corridor, but is progressively expanding the system to cover other zones on the transport network.
Starbucks has been expanding its presence in closed loop pre-paid cards with its Starbucks Card. This is a loyalty card that customers can use to pay for their drinks after adding money to the card.
