After electronic meal vouchers were launched in 2015 as an alternative to the paper version and gained further penetration in 2016, 2017 was the year to confirm the success of the digital version of the employee benefit. At the end of 2018, more than half of the existing meal vouchers were transferred to contactless cards, which was much more advanced than other EU markets, according to issuing companies’ representatives.
Amongst the new products launched in 2018, Revolut was the most significant, creating buzz in the industry. The product comes with many features that position it closer to debit cards than to other prepaid cards.
Transportation cards dominated the number of closed-loop prepaid cards in circulation. However, most of them are concentrated in Bucharest, the capital city, which has been adapting to more modern ticketing solutions in previous years.
Being the preferred operator by the three leading players offering employees benefits – Edenred, Sodexo and Groupe Up – Mastercard managed to build a dominant position in prepaid cards and through this it managed in 2017 also to consolidate its first position in terms of number of cards in total financial cards. With more than one million meal vouchers issued as contactless cards and operated by Mastercard in 2017, the company’s representatives reported that in 2018 one out of five contactless transactions within its overall portfolio was made with such products.
In 2018, meal vouchers on cards were clearly dominated by Edenred, Sodexo and Cheque Dejeuner Romania (Groupe Up), whilst Unicredit Bank had a limited presence. With the increasing number of cards and transaction value, this type of product also attracted attention from Banca Transilvania.
Aiming to replicate its success in other markets, Revolut launched in Romania in 2018 and was targeting 100,000 cards by the end of the year. Although debit cards are very accessible in Romania, being positioned as a prepaid card with multiple benefits and targeting young, educated and digitally orientated consumers, Revolut has the background to disrupt parts of the industry.
