This has positively influenced sales of herbal/traditional products in recent years as consumers seek natural ways of preventing and treating health conditions with fewer side effects. Growth in herbal/traditional products is being driven mostly by direct sellers through networking by leading producers such as Tianshi Health Products Co, Forever Living Products and GNLD, which have popularised the benefits of such products and branded them as 100% natural. Furthermore, herbal/traditional products are increasingly well packaged, which gives more confidence to consumers. The government is increasingly seeking ways to regularise and control the supply of these products.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Although there are currently efforts underway by the government to regulate the sale of alternative medicines, there is still limited competition between domestic and international brands within herbal/traditional products. Domestic brands offer largely loose and unbranded products, while better-packaged international brands dominate. Direct sellers lead in these respects, with the competition concentrated between the most popular three, Tianshi, Forever Living and GNLD.

PROSPECTS

  • The trend towards herbal/traditional products is expected to continue building in Cameroon over the forecast period as consumers are increasingly concerned about the side-effects of standard drugs. The government is also expected to regulate the category more effectively and encourage local players to package their products better.
