TRENDS

  • Mobile phones remains the category which is the single biggest contributor to volume sales of consumer electronics in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, volume growth rates are slowing down in mobile phones, with slower volume growth recorded in 2015 and with the category expected to record static volume growth in 2016. This is mainly due to the ongoing decline being seen in volume sales of feature phones as increasing numbers of consumers switch to smartphones.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Mobile phone volume sales in the Netherlands saw a change in leadership in 2015 as Apple Computer Benelux BV claimed the top spot in the category, marginally ahead of Samsung Electronics Nederland BV. Apple claimed the top spot from Microsoft Nederland BV, which inherited the leading position in the category when it acquired the Nokia brand in 2014. However, Microsoft fell to third position in 2015 due to the overall declines recorded in volume sales of feature phones, where it remains the dominant player, although the company also maintains a reasonably strong presence in smartphones. Apple and Samsung were already chasing hard on the heels of Nokia throughout the review period and 2015 marked the year that Apple overtook Nokia to claim the leading position overall in mobile phones, marginally ahead of Samsung.

PROSPECTS

  • As consumer demand for mobile phones is dwindling in the Netherlands, the category is expected to record negative volume growth over the forecast period, a huge slide from the strong performances recorded in the category over the review period. These decreases are set to be driven by negative growth in feature phones and the major slowdown expected in growth rates in smartphones. Feature phones, meanwhile, are expected to continue becoming less relevant as the majority of Dutch consumers are expected to purchase smartphones instead due to the major differences in functionality between these two types of mobile phones.
