TRENDS

  • In line with the more general trend of growing popularity of private label products in almost all fmcg categories in Serbia, tea was also seeing the same trend in 2014. The existing private label products were increasing their share and the market saw interest of some smaller retailing chains in introducing their own private label tea lines (such as Dis doo and Univerexport doo). Private label tea products mostly attract consumers with their sometimes significantly lower unit prices. This is possible because the tea-drinking culture is still significantly underdeveloped in Serbia and consumers tend to not pay attention to quality of their tea very much.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Accounting for 21% volume share in 2014, Fructus doo was the absolute leader in Serbian tea. The company has its products much better distributed than any competitor and this is combined with strong marketing support and frequent launching of new products, many of which are innovative in terms of peculiar but attractive flavours. All this has allowed the manufacturer to get ahead of other producers present in the Serbian market. The second ranked company was Macval doo with 8% volume share.

PROSPECTS

  • The tea-drinking culture will become more important in Serbia over the forecast period and tea products will no longer be mostly consumed when one is sick or with a cold. Producers have been trying to change this situation for years, but their efforts have been largely futile and consumers’ habits are changing very slowly. Thus fruit/herbal tea will remain the biggest category, but more and more consumers will slowly start drinking tea at different occasions than in times of not feeling well.
