The rate of smoking prevalence among Mexico’s adult population looks set to continue declining gradually over the forecast period. Further declines will be supported by restrictive tobacco control legislation, tax hikes and other activities by state agencies and NGOs aimed at reducing tobacco consumption.
The sale of e-vapour products is officially prohibited in Mexico under Article 16 of the General Tobacco Control Law. This legislation bans the marketing, sale, distribution, exhibition, promotion and production of any object that is not a tobacco product, but has branding or design elements that identify it as such.
Despite the broadly positive outlook, NRT smoking cessation aids is expected to remain something of a niche category in Mexico over the forecast period. Aside from the threat posed by e-vapour products, the category will continue to face indirect competition from an increasingly wide array of alternative product types and services that claim to help people stop smoking.
Perrigo de México continued to dominate NRT smoking cessation aids in value terms in 2019, with its NiQüitin remaining the only brand widely available via formal distribution channels. Imported products such as Habitrol and Equate patches were sold by online retailers, but their share of total current value sales remained negligible.
NiQüitin NRT patches release nicotine into the bloodstream over a 24-hour period. They are available in three strengths: 21mg, 14mg and 7mg.
Chemists/pharmacies remained the most important distribution channel for NRT smoking cessation aids in Mexico in value terms in 2019, followed by hypermarkets and drugstores/parapharmacies. While the value share held by internet retailing was negligible, this channel posted strong growth in current value sales towards the end of the review period, and should continue to gain ground over the forecast period thanks to growing consumer appreciation for the convenience and wider array of choices afforded by online shopping.
