Glass packaging unit volumes, which were already increasing in sauces, dressings and condiments, saw stronger growth in 2020 and 2021 than in previous years, like most other pack types. Glass jars and, in particular, glass bottles are increasingly gaining traction across various categories, such as bouillon.
Barbecues were already a popular activity in Germany prior to the pandemic, and, as COVID-19 restrictions began to be eased, consumers were able to socialise and get together for barbecues more often. This led to a rise in the use of barbecue sauces, which benefited packaging volumes of glass bottles and HDPE bottles.
Chilli sauces, already growing in popularity in Germany in the earlier years of the review period, with consumers increasingly purchasing slightly hotter chilli sauces, for example when cooking Asian dishes, saw even stronger growth during the pandemic, particularly in 2020, as consumers were preparing more meals themselves at home. This benefited the unit volumes of glass bottles, PET bottles and HDPE bottles used in the packaging of chilli sauces in both 2020 and 2021.
While the COVID-19 pandemic led to a rise in indulgence as consumers spent more time at home and reached for comfort foods, health consciousness continues to be on the rise and less healthy products like mayonnaise are expected to see declines over the forecast period. This will negatively impact unit volumes of glass jars, collapsible metal tubes, HDPE bottles and other plastic bottles used in the packaging of mayonnaise over the forecast period.
Sauces, dressings and condiments is a relatively mature and saturated landscape in Germany, with an extensive range of products available across retailing channels. It is therefore a challenge for product manufacturers and retailers to increase their volume sales, and, as such, many are expected to focus on premiumisation as a way to increase their retail value sales.
