With many consumers spending more time at home due to the pandemic, the home cooking trend was bolstered in 2020. This led to a decline in ready meals packaging volumes in 2019-2020 as more people cooked from scratch.
Due to the pandemic, consumers in Thailand spent more time at home, and thus sought out foods with longer use-by dates to reduce the frequency of their shopping trips, and to stockpile in case of a prolonged period of home isolation. This mainly benefited shelf stable ready meals, given their easy storage, convenient preparation and long shelf life.
Dried ready meals saw the most negative impact on its packaging volumes in 2019-2020, as these are considered highly processed and rarely healthy, and also have a longer preparation time in comparison with other ready meals formats. This resulted in a notable decline in the packaging volumes of flexible aluminium/paper over 2019-2020, which is the only pack type used for dried ready meals.
Packaging volumes of ready meals are expected to see dynamic growth in the forecast period 2022-2026, with growth across all categories and pack types. Although already the most significant categories within ready meals in terms packaging volumes, demand for frozen ready meals and chilled ready meals is expected to rise in the coming years.
Despite remaining the smallest category within ready meals, frozen pizza is expected to face poor growth prospects in the coming years, as this is a Western food which has not yet become particularly popular in Thailand. This is expected to curb the growth prospects for packaging volumes of folding cartons, which is the only pack type used for frozen pizza, over 2022-2026.
