Growth in packaging demand accelerated sharply in ready meals during 2020. COVID-19 led to consumers spending more time at home, while foodservice outlets were forced to close for an extended period.
Frozen ready meals packaging was the top performer in ready meals packaging during 2020 in terms of its rate of growth in packaging units, and, in 2021, it even managed to top the year-earlier growth rate, as it remained, by far, the most dynamic ready meals product area. Rigid plastic – ready meal trays and other plastic trays – is the most popular type of packaging for frozen ready meals, followed by flexible packaging (flexible plastic, flexible aluminium/plastic) and folding cartons.
While most dried ready meals are still packaged in thin wall plastic containers, folding cartons and flexible plastic have been steadily taking share from this pack type. During the review period, Quaker Products (M) adopted folding cartons for the launch of its Quaker Oat Porridge with Corn.
Aluminium trays and ready meal trays are expected to register strong growth over the forecast period as consumers have experienced the benefits of ready meals in such containers and have now integrated them into their consumption habits. These pack types will also benefit from being used in frozen ready meals, which will continue to be the most dynamic ready meals category over the forecast period.
E-commerce will continue to grow in importance as a distribution channel for ready meals during the forecast period, leading manufacturers to increasingly favour packaging that is light and robust. This will provide an additional boost to the popularity of folding cartons and flexible aluminium/plastic at the expense of metal food cans in shelf stable ready meals.
