Despite the decline seen for glass in many areas of packaged food packaging, glass maintained growth in sauces, dressing and condiments packaging in 2019, while still commanding nearly half of total retail unit volume in the category. While glass is less cost-effective compared to flexible packaging and is susceptible to breakages, it offers benefits such as chemical inertness, which is particularly important for high-salt products such as pickled products.
Rigid plastic accounts for over a third of total retail unit volume in sauces, dressings and condiments, with the most significant pack types being thin wall plastic containers, PET and HDPE bottles, and PET jars. Compared to glass, this pack type excels in applications where products are more or less viscous and where squeezable, lightweight and safe packaging is of greater importance.
Flexible packaging, chiefly flexible plastic and flexible paper/plastic, saw the most dynamic growth towards the end of the review period in sauces, dressings and condiments, while remaining fairly niche. This pack type is mostly used for powdered products including dry sauces and herbs/spices, with some application also in barbecue sauces and cooking ingredients.
